History
Stepping is a militaristic-like dance form which takes some of its rudimentary dance structure from West African gumboot dance. Stepping in its current form was started by Black fraternities and sororities in the 1940s, originally conducted by pledges or new initiates. The dance form has grown in popularity, among Greeks and non-Greeks, over the past 20 years.

Help Archive Stepping’s History
The NSSA needs you . . . to help the organization archive stepping’s history. Please send in photos from your recent or past step show events. Right now the NSSA is focused on archiving video and photographs from the 1970s.
